BBC Introducing with Tom Robinson on 6music
About
David is a freelance musician living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is known as a bass player, electronic composer, studio technician, sound engineer, teacher; it depends who you ask.
All in all, he makes sound.
This is his site.

David left his homeland Jersey to enrol on the Jazz & Contemporary degree at Leeds College of Music in 1999. From there he travelled up to Newcastle University going on to finish his Masters in Contemporary Electronic Music in 2004. His speciality was Glitch Music.

Now he can be found playing electric bass all over the UK but has performed as widely as Denmark, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland, Canada, USA, Russia and Malaysia. His main roles include playing fretless bass with award-winning folk singer/songwriter Jez Lowe and keeping the floor jumping with the Monster Ceilidh Band, although he's just as happy playing in musical productions such as Footloose and Oliver or jamming in a session. As a free-improviser he has played alongside Pat Thomas, Caroline Kraabel and Will Edmondes amongst others and recently recorded a studio album with Sardinian prepared guitarist Paolo Angeli. See the 'Bands' page for more info.

Other musical bits and bobs include setting up the New/Experimental music agency Canopy New Music, teaching experimental sound at Northumbria University, running masterclasses on Freely Improvised music, being assistant sound technician at Newcastle University, reviewing CD's for Sonic Arts Network and Furthernoise.org, mentoring at Durham Folk Summer School and recently becoming resident Community Music Musician and technician at Washington Arts Centre.

‘Twenty-Two Miniatures for Two Basses’ is his first solo album and a welcome break from the folk and glitch styles he has recently been associated with. It's a collection of minimalist modal pieces where two abstract bass parts intertwine to reveal fragmented melodies and chance rhythms. Curious!? You can purchase it HERE!

Basses

For those who are interested, here's what i play:
I have just two basses, nothing too fancy - just ones that i enjoy the sound/feel of. Firstly a 5-string fretted Stuart Spector Design, recently strung with a high-C. I've had this since i was 17 and still love the punchy, woody sound of it.

The other is an Italian 5-string Manne Acoustibass. It's fretless (lined) and strung with standard low-B. I bought it from a great bassist from these parts called Sean Taylor. It has both a great upright sound and a throaty electric bass sound with minimal of controls - too many controls and i can't stop fiddling! Everything runs through my (new) GenzBenz Shuttle 6.0 head going into the (old) Gallien Krueger MBE150 cab... unusual, but quite practical for my needs, so there!
